There's hope for the game being 60 frames per second at the start of a level, but once the camera swoops in to look at the lay of the land in front of you.

The framerate just can't keep up with all that's being thrown on the screen and it tanks far below 30 frames more often than it can stay there or above it. YES NO The problem lies within the simple fact that, at least on the Xbox 360, the developers of the core visual engine got a little too ambitious for their abilities: there's a lot of great effects in this game, from deep draw distances to depth-of-focus filtering for cool 3D effects, as well as impressive physics for when you knock over objects on your way from point A to point B. The levels that we were allowed to play at Games Convention showed off some pretty tight level designs that worked a lot of fun, on-rails elements with branching paths and secret areas that open up to check out during more leisurely action.

The blending works for the most part: you'll run in, out and across the screen on-rails when you're at blinding speed, but you also have the ability to stop in place and explore if you think you missed something along the way. That's kind of what Sonic Unleashed starts out becoming: a proper melding of 3D and 2D that works a lot of what was great about both the classic Genesis games as well as the 3D updates. Whether you loved the console games since the Dreamcast Sonic Adventure or not, I'll bet you could at least admit they were flawed attempts with the potential for coolness if enough of the old-school was put in place. Sonic hasn't had an easy ride on the consoles ever since he's been forced to endure the world of 3D. On the other hand, the framerate is absolutely abysmal most of the time, and the idea of the Were-hog (half hedgehog, half-wolf) had all its cool factor taken away the second they gave the creature totally ridiculous, Mr. On the one hand, it's got great sense of speed, really sharp visuals, and gameplay that's clearly a throwback to the style of design that actually works for the quick-running hedgehog. Sonic Unleashed is a game I really, really want to like.
